Electricity rates increased for commercial users in Ontario
Power – Price hike reflects market rate by Doug Alexander
Toronto – Companies including Inco Ltd and Falconbridge Ltd. will pay as much as 12 per cent more for electricity in Ontario after the province raised rates charged to heavy power users to bring prices closer to market rates.
The higher rates affect about 55,000 industrial and commercial electricity customers in Ontario who use more than 250,000 kilowatt-hours per year, Ontario ’s Energy Ministry said. Homeowners and small businesses, whose rates were raised last year, may face a fiver-per-cent increase, Energy Minister Dwight Duncan said at a press conference Wednesday.
The increases, which stay in effect for three years, are aimed at stabilizing the price of electricity. Ontario Power Generation Inc., the government-run electricity producer, will be able to charge industry an average 18 per cent more for power produced at nuclear plants and large hydroelectric stations, which account for two-fifths of Ontario ’s electricity.
“Large industry faces a substantial rate increase, the largest increase they’ve faced in many years,” Tom Adams of Energy Probe, a think-tank on energy policy, said in an interview.
Heavy power users will pay an average 6.8 cents for each kilowatt-hour of electricity this year. The figures includes Ontario Power Generation’s new regulated rate of 4.5cents plus distribution charges. The former regulated rate was 3.8 cents. The government also set a one-year limit on the revenue that Ontario Power can take in for power produced by smaller hydroelectric facilities, coal plants and gas-fired power stations, which produce one-third of Ontario ’s electricity.
